Earthquake damage of M7.8 occurred on February 6, 2023 ~After searching for support…~
This is a follow-up to the Turkey earthquake that I posted the other day. A man who is a relative of a friend of mine went from Istanbul to the disaster area of Kahmaranmaras for volunteer work, but we have lost contact with him since he arrived there. Aftershocks continue in the area, and there is a series of building collapses called pancake crashes. After being unable to contact him for several days, the man’s wife and his friend’s sister went there to pursue him further. I haven’t heard from you since then, so I’m worried. . . Even if volunteers go by truck to deliver relief supplies locally, it seems that a group like the mafia stops the whole car and robs the supplies. As a result, the current situation is that sufficient supplies have not reached the general public. Since this is the case in Turkey as well, it is speculated that the situation in Syria, which is heavily dominated by IS, is even more tragic.
2023.3.8 There is a trial calculation of the United Nations Development Program announced today.
Reuters quote: The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) said on the 7th that the Turkish-Syrian earthquake that occurred on February 6th is expected to cause more than 100 billion dollars in total damage to Turkey.
A senior UNDP official said in a video conference from southern Gaziantep ahead of the aid conference in Brussels on the 16th, “From the calculations so far, it is clear that the total amount of damage indicated by the Turkish government and donors exceeds 100 billion dollars.” Stated.
More than 52,000 people have died in the earthquake.
Since our team is also an NGO, we applied for crowdfunding to two major companies, but they said it was not possible because they had no track record in Turkey. They said that they had a track record of support activities in Africa, but that they would not be recognized in Turkey. It seems that you have to travel once at your own expense and apply again after accumulating a track record. It was the moment when my heart broke against the wall that stood in my way…
However, there is a need for timely assistance on site, and rescue operations must continue uninterrupted. A Turkish friend said that although further grassroots support is necessary, the worsening security situation in the area may have been the reason why he refused crowdfunding.
